What a vet home visit covers

When your dog or cat is off colour, a Pawssum vet comes to you and does a full consultation at home. Your vet will:

  • Talk through your pet's symptoms and history with you
  • Do a nose-to-tail physical exam, including temperature, heart and breathing
  • Explain what they think is going on and what your options are
  • Treat your pet on the spot where possible, using medications they carry
  • Write a prescription or take samples for testing if needed
  • Refer you to a clinic or hospital if your pet needs surgery, X-rays or overnight care

As part of Pawssum, Australia's leading mobile vet service, our vets visit homes across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Newcastle and the NSW Central Coast.

When to book a vet home visit

Book a vet if you notice any of these, especially if they last more than a day or keep getting worse:

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than a day or two
  • Limping, stiffness or trouble getting up
  • Not eating, sudden weight loss or drinking much more than usual
  • Lethargy or hiding away
  • Signs of pain such as whimpering, yelping or not wanting to be touched (how to tell)
  • Coughing, sneezing or runny eyes and nose
  • Ear infections, itchy skin, hot spots or sores that are spreading
  • Cloudy eyes, squinting or pawing at the face
  • Changes in behaviour, such as sudden anxiety or aggression

If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, has been hit by a car or may have eaten something poisonous, call us straight away or go to the nearest emergency hospital. See our emergency vet service.

What happens at a vet home visit

  1. Book online, call 1300 343 580 or text 0480 030 580. Tell us your pet's symptoms so the vet arrives with what they're likely to need.
  2. Your vet arrives at the booked time and meets your pet wherever they're most relaxed.
  3. The vet asks about your pet's history and symptoms, then does a full physical exam.
  4. They explain what they've found and talk you through the options and costs.
  5. Treatment happens on the spot where possible. Some samples go to a lab, and your vet will call you with results.
  6. You pay at the end of the visit, and your vet follows up if your pet needs more care.

What can a mobile vet treat at home?

Most everyday problems can be checked and treated at home, including:

  • Vomiting, diarrhoea and appetite changes
  • Skin conditions, allergies, hot spots and ear infections
  • Eye problems and minor wounds
  • Lameness, joint pain and arthritis
  • Coughs, colds and urinary problems
  • Blood tests and other samples for the lab

Some things need a clinic or hospital:

  • Surgery and dental work under anaesthetic
  • X-rays and most scans
  • Overnight care, drips and intensive treatment

If your pet needs any of these, your vet will stabilise them where possible and refer you to a nearby clinic. Read more in can a mobile vet treat serious conditions?

Vet home visit FAQs

Yes! Many licensed veterinarians offer home visits through mobile vet services like Pawssum. Instead of travelling to a clinic, a qualified vet comes to your home to examine and treat your pet in a familiar, stress-free environment. This approach is especially helpful for anxious pets, elderly animals or owners who find clinic trips difficult.

A mobile vet provides veterinary care at your home rather than at a traditional clinic. Pawssum’s mobile vet services cover a wide range of treatments, from routine check-ups, vaccinations and microchipping to managing illnesses, injuries and even end-of-life care. It’s the same professional standard of veterinary care, delivered with greater convenience and comfort for you and your pet.

Not necessarily. While our mobile vet services include a visit fee to cover travel, they’re often comparable to or even more affordable than traditional clinic visits, especially when you consider the time, stress and transport costs you save. At Pawssum, we offer clear, upfront pricing so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

Mobile vet pricing explained

Most of the time our vet will carry medications with them if they believe your pet may require them. This is why it is important to provide as many details about your pet's condition during the booking time. If the vet does not have the right medication on hand, they will provide you with a prescription.
