What is a titer test?

A titer test is used to measure the level of antibodies in an animal's blood against specific viruses. It helps assess an animal's immune response and determines if they have sufficient protection against certain diseases. By analysing a blood sample, titer testing can provide valuable information for making informed decisions about vaccinations and disease management, and allows our vet to tailor vaccination strategies and avoid unnecessary vaccinations when animals already have adequate immunity, promoting individualised and efficient healthcare for pets.

What pets might need a titer test?

A titer test is recommended for animals with unknown vaccination histories, those with adverse reactions to vaccines, or those that may have already developed natural immunity. A titer test can help determine if these pets have adequate levels of antibodies to protect against specific diseases.

Is a titer test useful for puppies and kittens?

Yes a titer test can be beneficial for puppies and kittens, especially if their vaccination history is unknown or incomplete. By measuring antibody levels, titer testing helps determine if the young animals have developed sufficient immunity from their mother's milk or if they require additional vaccinations. Titer testing can aid in assessing the appropriate timing for booster shots and ensure that the young animals receive adequate protection against diseases.

Can a titer test be used to determine if my pet needs re-vaccination?

Yes, a titer test can be used to determine if re-vaccination is necessary for your pet. By measuring the antibody levels in your pet's blood, titer testing provides insight into their current immune status. If the titer levels indicate that your pet has sufficient antibodies to protect against a specific disease, re-vaccination may not be immediately necessary. This individualised approach helps avoid unnecessary vaccinations, reduces the potential risk of adverse reactions, and ensures that your pet receives appropriate care based on their specific immune response.

How is a titer test performed?

A titer test is performed by collecting a blood sample from your pet. The blood is usually drawn from a vein in the leg or neck using a sterile needle and syringe. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory. In the lab, the blood sample is processed to separate the serum, which contains the antibodies, from the other components of the blood. The serum is then diluted and mixed with the specific pathogen or antigen of interest. The mixture is analysed to determine the highest dilution at which the antibodies can still effectively bind to the antigen. This highest dilution is reported as the titer level, which provides information about the animal's immune response to the particular disease or antigen.

A titer test is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies in your pet’s system, helping determine if they’re still protected against diseases like parvovirus, distemper, and hepatitis without the need for unnecessary vaccinations.

Titer testing helps avoid over-vaccination by checking if your pet is already immune. It’s a safe, science-backed alternative for responsible pet owners who want to protect their pets without giving unneeded shots.

Pawssum sends a licensed vet to your home to collect a blood sample from your pet. The sample is then tested at a certified lab, and your results are shared with you, usually within 10–15 business days.

Our titer test commonly checks for antibodies against core diseases such as:

  • Parvovirus
  • Canine Distemper
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
    Tests for cats may include:
  • Feline Panleukopenia
  • Feline Herpesvirus
  • Feline Calicivirus

Yes, many veterinarians across Australia accept titer test results as proof of immunity, especially for core vaccines. Always check with your local vet or council for specific requirements.

Yes! Titer testing is especially helpful for puppies post-vaccination to confirm immunity and for senior pets to avoid unnecessary vaccinations that may affect their health.
