How to prepare for the vet home visit for your dog

Preparing for a vet home visit for your dog is a great way to make the experience less stressful than going to the clinic. Here's a practical and dog-friendly guide to help you get ready.

Before the visit
  1. Confirm the appointment details - Double-check the time, date, and anything the vet might need from you beforehand (medical records, fasting).
  2. Share important information - Let the vet know about any health concerns, recent changes in behaviour, medications, or allergies.
  3. Pick a calm space - Choose a room that's quiet and roomy enough for the exam. Clear away clutter and remove anything fragile or distracting.
  4. Exercise your dog - A walk before the visit can help burn off nervous energy and make your dog more relaxed.
  5. Secure your dog in the examination area - Bring your dog into the chosen room a few minutes before the visit. Close doors and gates to keep them safely inside.
Have these ready
  • Medical records or vaccination history (if not already sent).
  • Any medications or supplements your dog takes.
  • A leash or harness, even for inside the house.
  • Your dog's favourite treats or toy (for distraction or comfort).
  • A towel or mat if the dog will be examined on the floor.
  • Waste bags, paper towels, or cleaning supplies - just in case.
During the visit
  • Stay calm and relaxed - your dog takes cues from you.
  • Keep your dog leashed if needed, especially at first.
  • Be ready to help gently hold or comfort your dog if the vet asks.
  • Ask questions! This is a great chance for one-on-one guidance.
After the visit
  • Reward your dog with praise, treats, or play.
  • Follow any care instructions or medication directions.
  • Watch for any side effects or changes in behaviour, and contact the vet if needed.

If your dog is especially anxious, aggressive, or has special needs, let the vet know in advance - they might recommend calming techniques or medication beforehand.
