How it works

Our calculator uses the standard veterinary formula trusted by vets across Australia.

Calculate RER & DER

The calculator determines your dog's Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and Daily Energy Requirement (DER) using proven formulas.

Get feeding recommendations

Receive personalised daily calorie targets, including a 10% treat allowance and weight management guidance.

The science behind the calculator

Our calculator uses the standard veterinary formula for calculating canine energy requirements:

  • RER = 70 x (body weight in kg) x 0.75
  • This Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is then multiplied by a factor based on your dog's life stage, activity level, and neuter status to calculate their Daily Energy Requirement (DER).
  • These formulas are used by veterinary nutritionists worldwide and are based on decades of research.
  • For weight loss, we calculate the RER at your dog's ideal weight and use appropriate multipliers to ensure safe, gradual weight reduction of 1-2% body weight per week.

Why calculate your dog's calorie needs?

  • Prevent obesity - Over 40% of Australian dogs are overweight. Proper calorie control helps maintain a healthy weight.
  • Optimal energy - Ensure your dog gets enough calories for their activity level without overfeeding.
  • Weight management - Create effective weight loss or gain plans with precise calorie targets.
  • Longer life - Maintaining healthy weight can add years to your dog's life and improve quality of life.
