What to expect

During the at-home visit, the vet will perform a thorough physical examination of your pet to assess their overall health. Here are some of the things that may happen during an at-home vet visit:

  • The vet will start by asking you questions about your pet's current condition, medical history, and general behaviour.
  • They will then perform a thorough physical examination of your pet which may include checking temperature, pulse, respiration rate, listening to their heart and lungs, and examining their eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. If they find any issues, they might collect a blood or urine sample for analysis at the lab.
  • Once the vet has gathered all the necessary information, they will provide you feedback about your pet.
  • If necessary, the vet may prescribe medication or other treatments to help manage your pet's symptoms and promote healing.
  • For cases which require in-clinic procedures such as x-rays, ultrasounds and surgery, Pawssum partners with local vet clinics to ensure continuity of care for your pet.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Even if your pet appears perfectly healthy, many illnesses develop slowly and subtly. Regular wellness exams help detect early signs of dental disease, kidney issues, heart conditions or tumours.

Your mobile vet will review your pet’s history (diet, behaviour, changes), then perform a full physical exam, checking ears, eyes, coat, teeth, joints, weight, heart and lungs. They may also recommend diagnostics like bloodwork or urine tests based on age or risk.

For most pets, an examination once a year is recommended. For older pets (senior category) or those with chronic conditions, more frequent visits (e.g., every 6 months) may be advised.

Your vet will discuss any findings, recommend tests or treatments if needed, and create or update a tailored wellness plan, covering diet, exercise, dental care, parasite prevention and lifestyle.

Yes. Younger pets often focus on establishing baseline health, vaccinations and early prevention. Senior pets are more likely to need advanced diagnostics and ongoing monitoring for age-related issues like arthritis, heart or organ disease.

Choose a quiet, well-lit area in your home for the vet. Have any relevant records (previous vaccinations, medications, diet changes) ready. Note any changes you’ve seen in your pet’s behaviour, appetite, movement or condition. Secure other pets or distractions to help the vet work safely.

If the vet identifies a health issue, they’ll explain the situation clearly, recommend next steps (further tests, specialist referral or treatment) and discuss costs. Early detection often means simpler, less expensive solutions.

The visit usually takes around 30–45 minutes at your home. Your vet will review your pet’s history, conduct a full physical exam, discuss findings and next steps, more time may be needed for older pets or if diagnostics are required.

Absolutely. During the visit, your vet will recommend additional tests tailored to your pet’s age, breed or health risk. You can choose to do them at the time.

Yes, even seemingly healthy pets can harbour early-stage conditions such as kidney issues, early arthritis, dental disease or heart murmurs. Catching these early via an annual exam means simpler, less costly care later.
