What is anal gland expression?

Anal gland expression for a dog refers to the process of releasing the fluid that is stored in the dog's anal glands (or sacs), which are located on either side of the anus. These glands secrete a strong-smelling fluid, typically used for marking territory or communicating with other animals.

In most dogs, the anal glands naturally empty when the dog defecates. However, some dogs may have issues with their anal glands, such as impaction, infection, or discomfort, which can prevent the glands from emptying properly. When this happens, the glands may need to be manually expressed by a veterinarian or a groomer to relieve the dog's discomfort and prevent further issues.

Common signs that a dog might need anal gland expression include:

  • Scooting their rear end on the ground
  • Excessive licking or biting at the anal area
  • Straining to defecate
  • A strong, fishy odour

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Anal gland expression is when the fluid in your pet’s anal glands (small sacs on either side of the anus) is manually emptied by a vet. This is needed if your dog (rarely cats) cannot empty them naturally, which can cause discomfort, infection or scooting.

The service starts from $99 + visit fee ($159). This price does not include any other medications or effort in restraining the pet.

We have great discounts for multiple pets during the same visit, talk to our team today.

We take Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit/debit cards as well as Vet Pay and Zip Pay.

Common signs include scooting (dragging the rear on the ground), excessive licking or biting at the back end, straining to defecate or a strong “fishy” odour.

It varies. Some pets rarely ever need it; others may need it more frequently (every few weeks or months) especially if they have underlying issues like soft stools, obesity or anatomical problems.

When performed by a qualified vet, yes, it’s safe and typically causes minimal discomfort. Your vet will handle it gently and often include a health check as part of the visit.

We strongly recommend that only a qualified vet or trained professional perform this. Incorrect technique can cause damage, infection or worsening of the condition.

Anal gland issues can be caused by obesity, soft or abnormal stool, anatomical abnormalities, allergies or recurring inflammation. These factors reduce the natural ability of the glands to empty properly.

Yes, the Pawssum service includes a home vet visit, health check and manual gland expression. This ensures your pet’s overall comfort and helps identify any other underlying issues.
