Breaking the Flea Cycle

Breaking the Flea Cycle

Fleas . . . Just the word makes us uncomfortable!

Fleas feed off the blood of humans and animals such as dogs and cats. These small critters cause our pets great discomfort and can be very hard to get rid of. A flea bite can become red, swollen and intensely itchy for both humans and pets.
When it comes to eliminating fleas it is important to understand the life cycle of the flea.
There are four stages in the life cycle of a flea: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The four stages can take anywhere from three weeks to several months, depending on where you live and weather conditions. Adult cat and dog fleas will live for about 2-3 months. Adult fleas can jump between hosts and survive on the host blood. What can you do?It’s important that you treat your pet and their surroundings including bedding with a flea treatment. There are numerous flea treatments for pets so discuss with our Pawssum vets which one suits you. A little trick is to rub the pet’s fur by the base of the tail onto your hand or a tissue. If you see small blackish dots then add a small bit of water to that. If it turns red then its flea dirt. It turns red because of the blood the flea has eaten. It’s important that you also get rid of fleas in your home

  • Vacuum floors, carpets, rugs, and furniture.
  • Use a flea carpet spray – spray carpets and upholstery in the home. Fleas will thrive in warm dark places, so spray under furniture and in between cushions.
  • Flea bomb your home – Some flea bombs are effective up to 7 months, long enough to kill all the life stages of a flea in most cases. You may need to use more than one flea bomb if you have a large home.
  • Treat your yard – you can get rid of fleas with a yard spray before they come into your home on your shoes, clothing or pet with a flea spray.
Fleas can be very frustrating for both pet and owner – persistence however does pay off so stay vigilant and protect your pet with a regular flea treatment.Pawssum vets are available 7am-11pm so call us on 1300 343 580 or www.pawssum.com.au or you can download our app from the app store by searching for Pawssum”.
