Saying goodbye with love: understanding the euthanasia process

Choosing euthanasia for a beloved dog is a deeply emotional and compassionate decision. Understanding the euthanasia process can help pet owners find peace and clarity during this difficult time. Having it performed by Pawssum mobile vets in the comfort of your home makes the process much more compassionate and memorable. The procedure is designed to be gentle and painless, allowing your dog to pass peacefully. Knowing what to expect, from sedation to the final moments, can ease anxiety and ensure you say goodbye with love, respect and comfort for your loyal companion.

Why choose a home euthanasia for your pet?

At Pawssum, we understand how heartbreaking it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. That's why we offer gentle, in-home euthanasia services for dogs - so your pet can remain in the comfort and safety of their familiar surroundings. Many pets experience fear or stress during car rides and vet visits, and we believe their final moments should be as calm and peaceful as possible.

A trip to the clinic can be exhausting and distressing for both pets and their owners. With our home visits including after-hours, there's no need to wait until the next day—we're here when you need us most. At home, pets are often more relaxed, away from unfamiliar smells, sounds, and clinical environments. Questions such as "How much does it cost to put a dog to sleep?" or "Should i put my dog down if he is still eating?" can be answered by our mobile vets.

Home euthanasia not only ensures your pet's comfort but also allows you to grieve in a private, supportive space, surrounded by loved ones. To learn more about our compassionate services, visit our page for dog euthanasia.

Compassionate aftercare options tailored to your dog's final goodbye

Pawssum staff will assist to organise everything for you to make it easier - Pawssum staff will assist to organise everything for you to make it easier. The caring Pawssum team helps coordinate your pet's visit, aftercare, and the return of ashes in your preferred urn. We offer professional and compassionate pet cremation and burial services tailored to your needs. Your pet can be collected directly from your home by our pet cremation staff or transferred by the attending veterinarian. If you prefer to bury your pet at home, please check with your local council, as regulations may vary.

Private cremation services - Private cremation is a meaningful way to honour your pet's life, with ashes returned to you for scattering or safekeeping in a personalized keepsake urn. Celebrating your pet's memory with a beautiful urn allows you to keep them close always. We offer a variety of urns to suit your preferences. Some pet owners also choose to place a memorial stone in their garden, perhaps where their pet loved to bask in the sun. Scatter boxes are a popular option for those who prefer not to keep an urn but wish to scatter ashes in a special place - whether in the garden, at the beach, or in the mountains where you shared memories. Private cremation lets you say goodbye with love and dignity.

General cremation services - For owners who decide not to have their pet's ashes returned, general cremation is a respectful option. Many owners find the experience comforting and often reconsider requesting ashes later. Take your time with this decision - our team is here to support you throughout this emotional process.

Payment plans available - To ease the financial stress during this difficult time, Pawssum offers flexible payment plans including Zip Pay and Vet Pay. Our friendly staff is dedicated to providing support and guidance, helping you farewell your pet in the respectful way they deserve.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) for dog euthanasia

A familiar environment is so much better for an end-of-life experience, where your beloved pet is comfortable in their own home surrounded by the people (and other pets) who love them. You can set the day and time when to say goodbye, and do things like light candles and play soft music during the euthanasia. You and your family can grieve in privacy and comfort.

We believe that pet owners should have the option of good quality veterinary care at home at little or no extra cost when compared to going to the vet clinic. Our vets are all registered, experienced, professional and compassionate who love to help pets. Our customers give us a superb rating.

Our euthanasia services start from $399. We take Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit/debit cards as well as Vet Pay and Zip Pay.

Euthanasia enables your vet to cause a painless death, or to stop providing life-support measures, to your pet. It can be done only by a certified veterinarian, after taking all measures to try to help your dog, and only with your consent.

Signs will include not having an appetite, not being able to walk, yelps due to pain, medications not working, your pet giving up, your pet avoiding its bed, and general suffering. If you are not sure that it is time for euthanasia, you can book our quality of life assessment or a Telepet video call or chat, and one of our experienced vets will guide you.

It is recommended not to give your dog any food or water two hours before the procedure. Ask the vet any questions you have, so that there are no surprises, including how to make it as compassionate as possible. Decide on whether you and your family want to be present and make sure everybody knows what will happen. It is very important to celebrate your pet's last days - whether it’s a trip to its favourite park or one last photo, surround it with love, care and joy one last time. Everybody will be grieving, so be prepared for that time and put in place a support mechanism for this.

The decision about leaving or staying is deeply personal, and whatever you decide it should come from a place of love and compassion you have for your pet. Choosing to stay will give you a sense of comfort, closure and acceptance, and a healthy ground for the grieving process. It's important to avoid feeling regret. However, some owners prefer to say goodbye before the euthanasia and that's also ok. In terms of children, you need to carefully consider if they are old enough to comprehend the concept of euthanasia, and whether they want to witness it.

Euthanasia may appear uncomfortable to the pet owner. However, it will not be painful for your pet. A combination of drugs used during euthanasia ensure that within seconds, awareness is gone and the animal falls into a state of unconsciousness. During the next couple of minutes after the drugs are given there may be nerve and muscle twitching, vocalizations, urination, defecation, and open eyelids - these might be scary to see but your pet will be unconscious and unaware of all of these actions. They will not feel any pain.

Yes, we offer a number of aftercare options including gently, carefully and with utmost respect, handling and transporting your pet following euthanasia; cremation with friends (other pets); private cremation; having your beloved pet's ashes scattered in the crematorium gardens; having your pet's ashes returned to you in a lovely container, tube or an urn; paw prints and other memorabilia.
