When should I vaccinate my puppy or kitten?

Your puppy should be vaccinated as follows:

  • 6 - 8 weeks: first vaccination
  • 10 - 12 weeks: second vaccination
  • 14 - 16 weeks: third vaccination

Your kitten should be vaccinated as follows:

  • 6 - 10 weeks: first vaccination
  • 12 - 14 weeks: second vaccination
  • 16 - 18 weeks: third vaccination

Why does my puppy or kitten need a vaccination?

Pet vaccines safeguard your beloved friend against various infectious diseases that pose a risk to both animals and humans. They contain substances resembling the disease-causing micro-organism. Once administered, the immune system mounts a response, attacking the foreign substance and forming a memory of it. This memory prepares the body to combat the same disease should it encounter it in the future. Your pet's body typically takes approximately seven days to respond and develop immunity after vaccination.

It is always recommended not to expose your new puppy or kitten to other pets until they've had all their vaccinations.

What vaccines will my puppy or kitten receive?

There are two types of vaccines that the vet may administer:

  • Core vaccines - those which every pet must receive, no matter their age, environment, habits, breed, or circumstance. Core vaccines help prevent animals from contracting life-threatening diseases that have a global distribution.
  • Non-core vaccines - those required based on the context in which the animal lives. These include geographic location, environment, and lifestyle.

Our at-home vet will know what vaccine to administer to your pet based on its age, circumstances and previous vaccine history.

Puppy vaccination

The most likely scenario is that the vet will provide your puppy the C5 vaccine, which contains the 3 core vaccines (against the highly contagious and potentially life-threatening canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus, and canine parvovirus) as well 2 non-core vaccines (against kennel cough and canine parainfluenza virus).

Kitten vaccination

The most likely scenario is that the vet will provide your kitten the F3 vaccine, which contains the 3 core vaccines (against the highly contagious and potentially life-threatening feline herpes virus, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopaenia).

What to expect

Puppy or kitten health check

During the at-home visit, the vet will perform a thorough physical examination of your pet to assess their overall health. Here are some of the things that may happen during an at-home vet visit:

  • The vet will start by asking you questions about your pet's current condition, medical history, and general behaviour.
  • They will then perform a thorough physical examination of your pet which may include checking temperature, pulse, and respiration rate, listening to their heart and lungs, and examining their eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. If they find any issues, they might collect a blood or urine sample for analysis at the lab.
  • Once the vet has gathered all the necessary information, they will provide you feedback about your pet.
  • For cases which require in-clinic procedures such as x-rays, ultrasounds and surgery, Pawssum partners with local vet clinics to ensure continuity of care for your pet.

Yes, there are a few things you can do to prepare before the vet arrives for an at-home pet examination. You should:
  • Gather relevant information about your pet's medical history, including any previous diagnoses, medications, vaccinations, and recent test results
  • Make a list of any specific concerns or symptoms you've noticed in your pet
  • Prepare a quiet and comfortable area in your home where the vet can perform the examination

  • and have some treats or rewards on hand to help keep your pet calm and co-operative

No, our vets do not perform surgery at home as it requires a sterile and controlled environment. If surgery is required, we partner with local clinics and will refer you to one of our partners.

We meticulously check every vet's name, address, Vet ID, degree, identification documents (drivers licence) and their photograph against the relevant vet board authority.

If your pet requires further diagnostic tests, the vet will discuss the specific tests needed based on the initial examination findings. These tests may include blood work, imaging (such as X-rays or ultrasounds), urine or fecal analysis, or other specialised tests depending on the suspected condition. The vet will explain the purpose of the tests and their potential benefits. They will guide you on the next steps, which may involve scheduling the tests at one of our partner vet clinics or co-ordinating with a diagnostic facility. The goal is to gather additional information to help accurately diagnose your pet's condition and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for their well-being.
